Who am I?
I am an
experienced educator, with post-graduate qualifications in autism, who is
passionate about working with children who have an autism spectrum disorder. I
am well known in the Canberra autism community for my advocacy for these
children and their families.
As
a private Autism Consultant and Special Educator, I work closely with families
in their homes to assist them in the implementation of a detailed
individualized home program.
My approach is a developmental one aimed at helping
each child develop age appropriate functional skills and behaviours. The
child’s strengths and interests are incorporated into an individualized program
which focuses on communication, play and socialization.
My advocacy for children with autism spectrum disorder
and their families has led to my involvement in promoting autism awareness in
the wider Canberra community. I have spoken to groups with an interest in
autism spectrum disorder both in the ACT and other parts of Australia. I am
also available to consult with schools, preschools, day care centres etc.
In addition to my private consultancy,
established in 2003, I am a dedicated committee member of the Autism
Association ACT who is always ready to share my knowledge about autism spectrum
disorder with others. My current projects with Autism ACT include the planning
of the Biennial Australian Autism Conference to be held in October 2004 in
Canberra, the establishment of a book lending scheme for primary schools in the
ACT and running a Friendship Group for children to foster their development of
social and friendship skills.
I have taught children who have a wide range of
disabilities - in the last fifteen years I have specialized in teaching
children who have an autism spectrum disorder. My interest in the education of
children with special needs was ignited in the late 60s when I taught two
children who had hearing impairments. Since then I have worked as a special
education teacher at Turner Preschool, the Child Health and Development Service
(now Therapy ACT) and at Yarralumla Primary School in a Learning Support Unit,
specifically for children who have an autism spectrum disorder. I have also
worked overseas in the special needs field.
My skills and professional integrity have been
acknowledged through numerous awards, from both parent and professional groups.
